Art
Visual Art at Cherry Creek Academy focuses on Art History, Art Production, Art Techniques and Materials as well as Art Criticism. Our Subject matter comes from the Core Knowledge Sequence and is aligned with the Colorado State Standards. Students participate in the K-8 art program on a regular weekly basis K-5, a semester basis in 6th grade and a quarterly basis in 7th and 8th grades. We have a K-1 Art teacher and a 2nd – 8th grade art teacher on staff.

Art production focuses on using the principles and elements of design through a variety of media to create finished pieces. Our students are taught to be artists and to value the work that they create. Through art we explore communication, aesthetics, culture and history. We put our imaginations to work and develop skills and techniques through a wide range of art materials, 2-Dimensional and 3-Dimensional media. We incorporate a variety of disciplines including math and writing in addition to hands on art production to immerse the children into the Visual Arts. CCA participates in a variety of Art shows throughout the school year to emphasize the nature of Visual Arts. Our students learn the value of art from a young age and are proud to call themselves artists.

Music
The music department at Cherry Creek Academy serves every grade and strives to develop proficient and competent young men and women in preparation for high-school programs and post-secondary life. Using the Core Knowledge Curriculum to meet state and national standards, students realize music performance vocally and on instruments, compose and improvise music lines, identify and describe various composers and their music from each era of music history, analyze the quality of music performances, read and perform traditional music notation, explore advanced facets of music theory, and demonstrate various other proficiencies and competencies.

Students are provided with opportunities to pursue instrumental music in band and orchestra and concentrated vocal performance in middle-school choir. Expectations for student accomplish across grade levels are high and students emerge well prepared for their future endeavors.

Computers/Technology

At Cherry Creek Academy, we use computers to help students develop their understanding of Core Knowledge topics while they gain experience with computer techniques. Over the past nine years, our students have used desktop publishing, website design, PowerPoint presentations, video productions, musical compositions, and other multimedia methods to creatively explore and present concepts from their Core Knowledge curriculum. This hands-on approach is designed to help students understand classroom topics from a new perspective, while developing technical proficiency at the same time.

Library/Media
The Cherry Creek Academy Library is a central part of the school and is located appropriately in the center of the building. The librarian meets with each class once a week, reading stories to the younger students which usually connect to the curriculum being taught in the classroom or doing author studies. Library and research skills are taught in the middle and upper grades. The Library functions on a “Revolving Door” policy which allows students to come to the library any time during the day when the need arises. There are enough computers for an entire class. These computers are the “catalog” for the library as well as providing access to Accelerated Reader Quizzes (a comprehension testing program), World Book Online, Internet Access for research, and software for Kindergarten and First Grade Computer Classes. The Library enhances the students’ success at Cherry Creek Academy by providing them with the necessary tools and availing them the opportunity to learn to love reading.

Spanish
¡BIENVENIDOS A LA CLASE DE ESPAÑOL!

¡Hola! ¡Bienvenidos a la clase de español! Here at CCA, we have an intensive Spanish program for students in 7th and 8th grades.  Intensive Spanish language instruction allows many CCA students to pass the placement test and directly enter Spanish 2 in high school.

We focus on communication and actively using the language as we develop the competencies delineated in the Standards for Foreign Language Learning. We use predominantly Spanish in the classroom and implement a variety of exercises, activities and games that engage different learning styles and that appeal to the students.

We use the very comprehensive curriculum, “Realidades 1”, which is written based upon the Standards for Foreign Language Learning. “Realidades 1” focuses on communication and on helping students to meet our goal of developing the Standards’ competencies. The curriculum is designed for all students and learning styles and presents language-learning in a comprehensible way via meaningful context. We do a lot of interactive activities together to facilitate feeling comfortable using Spanish. Our goal is for our Middle School Students to complete “Realidades 1” by the end of Eighth Grade, and to be able to move comfortably into Spanish 2 in high school!
