Summer Reading
The following lists are designed to prepare students for the upcoming school year, fulfill summer grade-level reading requirements and encourage reading just for the joy of it.
Most of the books are available in local libraries or can be purchased at any retail or online store.
HOW TO USE THIS LIST
Books are grouped by grade, first through eighth, using the American Reading Company (ARC) IRLA level and by the appropriateness of content.
Some books may be listed with higher or lower ARC levels than for the grade they are recommended. This is for two reasons. First, there are diverse reading abilities among children in the same grade. Second, ARC is not an indicator of how appropriate the content is for students of different ages. For example, The Outsiders has a Black reading level, but the content is appropriate for middle school students, not for fourth-grade students.
Children may select recommended books from lists outside of their grade level based on reading skill. For instance, a second grader may choose books from the first-grade or third-grade lists. However, students in fourth grade, or lower, should not read books recommended for the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth-grades since the content of these texts may not be appropriate. Fifth-grade students should only read young adult books with parental permission. Please click on the links below to take you to the designated sections:

Incoming Third Graders Required and Recommended Reading
Incoming Fourth Graders Required and Recommended Reading

The top part of the jumper may be re-sewn to lengthen the jumper
Pants that become too short or have holes in the knees can be made into shorts the
same length as purchased shorts
