3rd Grade News
Week of November 15, 2021
A message from the PTO: The PTO Hospitality team is getting ready to prepare our wonderful Thanksgiving baskets that we do for the staff every year. This year, due to Covid, the PTO will be purchasing items and building baskets. We would like to ask if you could please contribute a $5 dollar donation to help make these baskets special. You can send $5 dollars in cash in an envelope to the front office or you are welcome to Venmo Ms. Sourial, our PTO Hospitality chair at My Venmo @Natalie-Sourial. Thank you in advance for your help making these special for our staff!
A quick reminder of the CCA dress code, as the weather gets colder it is important students wear a CCA sweatshirt or sweater. Students are not allowed to wear their winter coats in the classroom. They are of course welcome to wear winter items (jackets, hats, gloves) out to recess but in the classroom, it needs to be a CCA sweater or sweatshirt.
We will be assigning math homework Monday through Thursday. We will be asking students to read for 30 minutes each night. Students will also have spelling words they will need to study daily - their spelling test is on Friday. The third-grade team also decided to provide students with optional math problems for kids to do over the weekend. This is not required but a great way to get extra practice!
This week, we will begin our final project in regards to our weather topics. We will continue to look for the main idea and supporting details in our texts, and then begin to write informational paragraphs that have these features as well. They will also be including text features in their projects (captions, maps, diagrams, illustrations, table of contents). We will be working on this final project gradually over the next few weeks, as we continue to finish our research.
This week, we will be reviewing lessons 30 - 40 on Monday and Tuesday to prepare for our test on Wednesday. We will begin lesson 41 on Thursday and lesson 42 on Friday focusing on subtracting across zeros and rounding numbers to the nearest hundred.
Social Studies & Science
This week we will review for our test on Vikings. The test will be on Tuesday. The third-grade team sent home a study guide on Friday of last week to help students prepare. The rest of the week we will spend some time creating a Viking craft and taking a closer look at the different kinds of Norse poetry and even creating our own poems. At the end of the week, we will have a mini-lesson on gratitude and ways we can express thankfulness by making a list of things we are thankful for.
We will be starting the new science unit when we return from break. The next unit will be over the structures of life!

- Please be sure to check your student’s planner each night. We are starting to have more homework now that we are starting to get more into the content. It is really important they turn it in on time!
- Spelling tests are every Friday.

Happy Thanksgiving 3rd Grade families! I am happy to say we are heading into the break with 3rd grade finished with another fantastic project! Our students will complete their Cozy Corner room scene this week. Students have worked hard to use perspective and shading to create the illusion of the corner of a room. They have drawn and added texture to a teddy bear using marker bleed and will now draw additional toy items to include in their scene. We will finish these off by gluing all of the parts together to create these cute, cozy scenes!
We also have a message from PTO regarding our Original Works fundraiser. We completed drawings of crayons and gumballs earlier this year which are ready to order on products for this fundraiser:
Original Artworks Fall fundraiser has started. Please check with your students if they have not yet brought home the order instructions for the online orders and remind them to get them. This Monday’s Eagle has details for the online orders and also info on the classes participating in the Fall Fundraiser.
The deadline for the order is 11/18/2021. There will be correspondence in the next Eagle as well.
Please feel free to email me at firstname.lastname@example.org if you have questions.

This month I am looking forward to looking at the non-fiction section of the library with the students. We will talk about the Dewey Decimal System and look at how books are organized on the shelves. We will also celebrate World Kindness Day and will read Peter H. Reynolds new book, Our Table.
Music - Mrs. Glosup
Ms. Achs and Ms Doyle: In November, 3rd grade will learn about composer Rimsky-Korsakov. We will take a look at his Scheherazade, specifically, "The Sea and Sinbad's Ship". We will also continue our note reading skills. We will work to identify notes on the treble clef and work towards more complex rhythm understanding.
Third graders in music will be performing at the Veterans Day Assembly. They will be using ASL to sign the National Anthem at the beginning of the event. This event will be VIRTUAL on November 11 starting between 8 and 8:30am. When we are closer to that date, there will be information and a link to watch this event provided in the Eagle.
Ms. Truitt: Music class is scheduled for the second semester this school year. This means we will not have music class until after Winter Break.
