Social Emotional Support
“Social Emotional Learning, often referred to as SEL, is a framework that focuses on nurturing students’ emotional intelligence, self-awareness, self-regulation, interpersonal skills, and responsible decision-making. It recognizes that education is not just about academic subjects, but also about personal development and the ability to form positive relationships.” ~Thought Stretchers Education
Social Emotional Learning (SEL) at CCA takes place in a variety of ways: Second Step, Peer Helpers/Peer Tutoring, Buddy Walks, Lunch Bunches, Small Group Support, and One-on-One Support. My role as School Counselor allows me to provide SEL through whole class lessons (Second Step) on a weekly or bi-weekly basis to all grade levels at CCA, as well as work with students in both small groups and one-on-one settings. I also provide peer conflict mediation when students are not able to work through a conflict and help them problem solve.
Meg MacFarland oversees Peer Helpers, which gives middle school students the opportunity to develop leadership skills through mentoring younger students with Buddy Walks and Peer Tutoring.
SEL is a process that helps students develop the skills to understand and manage their emotions, build positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. It's a critical part of education and human development, impacting well-being, academic success, and overall life skills.
Working with the students, parents, teachers, and staff at CCA brings me so much joy! It is a privilege to serve this community. Please reach out anytime with questions or concerns via email or phone.
